My journey as a patient advocate began when I was diagnosed with stage 2 triple-negative breast cancer. There were many obstacles I had to overcome in the healthcare system, all while trying to manage the physical and emotional effects of a cancer diagnosis.
When I was first diagnosed, I did not have health insurance and did not qualify for Medicaid. I got shuffled through the public health system, where I had to locate financial assistance to cover my DMX/recon and first two chemo cycles.
Then in 2014, the Affordable Care Act took effect. I had to navigate the brand new healthcare market place to find health insurance coverage that not only could I afford, but also covered my preferred doctors/hospitals, as well as the remainder of my cancer treatments. Once my health insurance took effect, I had many challenges getting my treatments authorized. I had to step in to facilitate communication between my healthcare providers and insurers to ensure my treatments were authorized and covered.
Through all of this, the never-ending mountain of medical bills that came in was overwhelming. Often my medical bills and insurance claims had errors. Luckily, I knew how to speak the medical billing language to resolve the issues successfully.
Once the dust settled and I had time to sit and reflect on my experience, it brought me back to my past life working as an insurance specialist and medical biller for various hospitals and surgery centers. It dawned on me that many people don’t understand their medical bills or even how to resolve them if there was a problem. This lack of understanding left them in a financial disaster.
I realized that people need help from someone who not only has a comprehensive knowledge of the system but has their interests in mind. Thus Pondhawk Advocacy was born!
